Sherman

I forgot to include these pics on my Valentine's Day post. I knit this worm as a little valentine for Si. He named him Sherman and has been sleeping with him every night. Sherman also "sits" in bed with us each night while we're reading. Both Sherman and Silas seem to be enjoying the Marvelous Land of Oz (we finished the Wonderful Wizard of Oz a few weeks ago, so now we're on book two of Baum's series). Guess he's a bookworm (groan).
More about this project can be found on my knitting blog.

Little Rabbit and the Christmas Forest

As promised in the last post, here are a few more pictures of the Little Rabbit hat, which I made for Silsas just before Thanksgiving.

And in other "Knitting for Silas" news, below are a few pictures of the Christmas Forests, which I've been working on for the past several months. Finished in time for December 1st, there is a puzzle piece hidden beneath each numbered tree. At the end of the 24 days, we'll be able to put our puzzle together. This was a lot of fun to make and it will surely be a part of our holiday celebrations for years to come. You can read more about it on my knitting blog HERE, and watch a video of Silas exploring it during my photo shoot HERE.

One more thing...A BIG birthday shout out to Papa. Happy Birthday! We love you :)

December 09 Book of the Month

Announcing Planet Silas’ December 09 Book of the Month:

Shall I knit you a hat? : a Christmas yarn / by Kate Klise ; illustrated by M. Sarah Klise.

When Mother Rabbit knits a warm winter hat for Little Rabbit, he likes it so much that he suggests they make hats for all of their friends as Christmas gifts.

Definitely at the top of our list of favorite picture books, this is a wonderful, colorful, knit-themed Christmas book, perfect for all of you knitting mamas out there. Another example of a book that I’d love to live in, Little Rabbit and his mother have such a caring and close relationship. They share carrot cake as well as hat-making ideas, and snuggle together on the couch of their cozy little home. Silas and I love to look at the pictures together, especially the winter market scenes, which are filled with an assortment of animals buying or selling all kinds of foods and holiday treats. I love that the Rabbits stay up late together making gifts for their friends, and I love that although the hats may be ridiculous, their recipients realize the value of the homemade hats, not just for their practical application, but because their friends cared enough to make each hat “especially for you” as Little Rabbit says.

At the back of the paperback edition, there is a pattern to make a hat like Little Rabbit’s, complete with bunny ears. How could I resist! Now I have my own Little Rabbit!

(I'll post a few more hat pictures later...)

Maybe if we’re very good boys and girls, the Rabbits will invite us to their house to celebrate Christmas with some tea and three pieces of carrot cake each! That’s what I want for Christmas this year:)

Farmers Market, Digger, Digger

The last of the digger sweater photo shoots...

Silas is fixated on the live music, that is being played just out view. The music is definitely Silas' main reason for wanting to go to the market on Saturdays. We'll miss it this winter!
I love that our market basket matches his sweater.

There's an old front-end loader in a parking lot that Silas has been given permission to ride on whenever he wants. He's one very happy kid when he's riding that thing, let me tell you.

A few more pictures are posted here.

Boats and Water photoshoot

As promised, here are a few pics from our weekend photo shoot. Silas always asks to go see the boats when we're downtown, so taking a walk to the marina, and the Waterfront Park, is pretty commonplace. Up above: Silas and I are at the end of one of the piers, next to a boat that's named, no joke, "The Knotty Nurse."

Here we are at the Waterfront Park adjacent to the marina.
You probably can't tell from these shots, but this is the hull of a boat that's been planted in the ground and is used as a stage for events in the park.
Silas loves to run around on it. Clearly it's also a favorite of local graffiti artists. We determined that the paint chipping looked like a bat. Silas now requests to see the "bat pictures."
The kid is looking none too pleased in this next image. But it's a decent picture of me, so whatever. I'm posting it.
And a couple more of the waterfront: People dock rowboats next to shore and then take them out to their houseboats, yachts, or even their houses across the harbor.
Out-of-service ferries in the distance (in service ferry is a bit beyond them, but not in view).
I will post a few more from the farmers market and whatnot some other time.

Just the beginning

We did several photo shoots this weekend featuring Silas and the digger sweater I recently finished for him (It will be part of his Halloween costume). I have a lot of pictures to sort through and will post more here and on my knitting blog soon. For now: The top pic is one of my favorites. How did I get such a golden, sunshine child? The bottom pic shows us killing time waiting for D...

So much more to post, so little time. If you are following this blog, beware: you will be seeing a lot of that digger sweater, which he is very pleased with and eager to wear.

And on a side note, we had a lengthy power outage this evening, which is a sign that autumn is truly here. We ate by candle light (luckily our stove is gas), and then took a walk through the forest amidst growing shadows. When we got back to the yard, we watched the full moon rise over the tree tops. The power came on just as Silas was getting ready for bed. All in all, a very enjoyable power-outage (any that last less than a day usually are :)

When one hat simply is not enough...

...Silas recommends that you double-hat it!

Note: No toddlers where forced to wear hats for the making of these pictures. He insisted on putting on the second hat himself and got testy with me when I tried to take it off.
I think he would have gladly worn both hats for the rest of the day!

Hanging out on Thanksgiving

Holidays are the perfect occasion for me to unabashedly dress up my child in hand knits. Looking quite spiffy on Thanksgiving morning, here's Silas, sporting the v-neck sweater I made for him before he was even born, and which FINALLY fits him.

Hanging with Sparky:
And Shannon:
And friends...Hey, what's so interesting over here?
Oh, it's just those silly sheep. Blu is eating some alfalfa of of Audrey's back (and getting a mouth full of wool for his efforts too), which everyone thought was pretty funny.
We had a pretty restful, low-key Thanksgiving, which is just the way we like it to be. Silas talked to all of his grandparents on the phone, and we made a lot of great food, which we ate next door at Patrick and Shannon's house. And as you can see, we got to spend a fair amount of time outside walking around the yard and neighborhood. It was a happy Thanksgiving for us!

Halloween '08: Pumpkin Sprite!

Here's our little pumpkin sprite!
It took over a month to make his costume, but I think it was a success. I was worried at first because he wasn't too fond of wearing the hat. I lined it with flannel and then he agreed to wear it. In fact, he wore it for 4 hours without trying to take it off once!

In addition to the felted pumpkin hat and knit pants, I made a simple crocheted quiver for him to carry a stalk of Chinese lanterns on his back.

Here he is, running to the car so that we can go trick-or-treating downtown.
Being only 19 months old, Silas doesn't eat candy and we didn't want the temptation of having too much of it in the house, so while we did collect some, we largely wanted Silas to give something away instead. Seeing as though he was a pumpkin sprite, I got a bunch of tiny pumpkins for him to pass out. Our first stop was Cafe Trios where Silas gave away his first pumpkin of the evening to his favorite barista (apparently, in exchange for her phone, which he really did not want to give back).
Then, we hit Winslow Way (our main street), which was closed to traffic for trick-or-treat.
We saw lots of great costumes, and as the rain had stopped, there ended up being tons of people.
Here's our friend Carmen, with baby Ozma, dressed as a bat. So cute!

A good shot detailing the back of his costume:
Silas loves this fountain, which is right outside my favorite store, Churchmouse Yarns and Teas.
After trick-or-treat, we made one last stop at Shannon and Patrick's house. Silas gave away his last 2 pumpkins and posed for a few more pictures before calling it a night.
What a great Halloween! And if the pictures weren't enough, here's a short video too. Remember that if you click on the video and go to Youtube, you can choose to watch it in high quality.

We hope you all had a fun Halloween!

Halloween Costume Sneak-Peek

I don't want to totally give Si's Halloween costume away, and I am actually still working on some of the accessories. I thought I'd let you have a sneak-peek, however. So, here's a partial view of the hat... stay tuned for more pictures on Halloween.

19 Months Old

Silas is 19 months old, as of yesterday...
All of these pictures were taken during a little photo shoot I did last weekend.

Believe it or not, there are a few more pictures and details of the sweater/hat set that I knit, which you can see here.
Clearly, he's not afraid of the sheep anymore:
He's truly a toddler, but still my little baby. Love you Silas!

Lil' Red Riding Hoodie

Barb from my work knit this for a relative. She let me borrow it for the night to see how it fit Silas. Such a cute pattern! You can't see from the pics, but there's a zipper going all the way up the back. Hmmm. I may have to make one of these for him, despite the fact that he already has about 5 hand knit sweaters to wear this winter. What can I say. Knitting is an addiction.

Anyways, well done, Barb! The recipient of this hoodie is one lucky baby!
