It's the simple things in life

Since moving to WA, our family has been without a very basic and essential household item--a table we can all sit and eat at. We never felt we had room for one given the design of our house. Drew and I got in the habit of eating dinner on the couch. Now that Silas is eating "real" food, however, we feel it's important to eat together as a family as much as impossible, and the small counter we were crowding around just wasn't cutting it. So, we finally decided to do a bit of rearranging and we bought ourselves a great wooden table. We love it!
Here's Master Silas sitting at the head of the table:
We also got a new hook-on high chair for Silas, so as you can see, he is seated right at the table with us now. For several months, he's had the unfortunate habit of kicking and shaking his other high chair. This included shaking the high chair until it rocked and when we added the table to the mix, kicking it away from himself. So the change in chairs was necessary both for his safety and our sanity.
Another simple thing in life that we are not taking for granted today: Our boy is eating well again! It is SUCH a relief! Today, he had rice and an entire avocado for lunch. And as you can see, he's able to eat peas again, which makes him very happy.
He gets very playful and amusing at mealtimes:
He loves this sorting drum but it wasn't a great idea to give it to him at the table, as he later threw it on the floor, and narrowly missed hitting our wi-fi modem. Oops!

I've made coasters (see pictures of them here) and will hopefully make place mats to accent our lovely table soon!

Head Shoulders Knees & Toes

Head: Silas and mom survey the damage from our recent storm while dad snaps a few pictures. Our road was completely flooded during the storm but mom's car managed to traverse several feet of gushing water on Monday to make it home safely. And it wasn't just our road. In Silverdale, where mom works, many streets and parking lots were completely flooded. Salmon actually swam across the main thoroughfare, Silverdale Way, when their stream flooded!



Shoulders: Rides on dad's and mom's shoulders are a new experience for Silas. He loves being up that high and also enjoys the opportunity to get in some good hair pulling.










Knees: Silas isn't crawling yet, but he REALLY wants to. He lunges forward from a sitting position onto all fours, then promptly flops over. It is frustrating to him that he is so intellectually ready to explore, but isn't quite physically capable. The more he practices though, the closer he gets (mind you, mom and dad really aren't complaining that he still isn't too mobile). As you can see from the picture, he really can balance on those knees nicely.

Toes: Post-bath is a perfect time to play with those toes! Actually, bath time is a great time to play with them too. Silas loves to grab onto both toes while in his bath chair, and then throw them both down into the water and splash. Mom is often just about as wet as Silas is by the end of the bath!

Happy Halloween!

If you guessed Silas would be going as a Turtle for Halloween (as if the blog entry entitled "the ultimate turtle boy" didn't give it away all together), you were right! Mom made his hat and dad painted his "shell" which was made from a bike helmet. Green clothes and socks with turtles on them completed the costume. We headed downtown with our friend Jessica to take in the festivities. Bainbridge Island closes it's downtown to traffic for Trick-or-treat, and all of the businesses pass out candy. Dragon Boy

No, Silas isn't going as a dragon for halloween, but both mom and dad couldn't resist pointing the camera in his direction once mom put him in this adorable dragon outfit (see previous movie, too!). And speaking of Halloween, Silas is previewing part of his costume in one of these pictures--the tri-colored crocheted hat mom made for him. Can you guess from this hat what he'll be for Halloween?

COOL Summer Stylings with Silas

Yes, that's right, Midwestern readers, it really has been "hat and sweater" cold here this week. At least Silas got to show off one of his handmade sweaters, and try out his 12-month corduroys and sweatpants, which all fit rather nicely on this almost 5-month-old. Now, thankfully, warm weather is upon us again, and it's back to onesies and short-sleeve rompers for the time being...
